Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery | Dr.Muffi
Bariatric
surgery can be performed laparoscopically (through a small incision in the
abdomen) or through an open procedure.
The
operation, which is usually performed laparoscopically, involves making five to
six small incisions in the abdomen by inserting a small telescope connected to
a video camera and surgical instruments. The surgeon staples the upper part of
the stomach away from the lower part to create a small pouch in the stomach.
Weight loss
operations are performed with traditional large or open incisions in the
abdomen. Today, most types of bariatric surgery are performed laparoscopically.
A laparoscope is a small tubular instrument with an attached camera. The
laparoscope is inserted through small incisions in the abdomen.
